Wheeling Symphony Orchestra

The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra is a regional orchestra serving Wheeling, West Virginia, with a season that mixes classical concerts, pops programs, a holiday show, a family concert, film music, and choral works. Performances take place at several venues around town, including the restored Capitol Theatre downtown, outdoor settings at Oglebay Park, the intimate Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, and the WesBanco Arena. The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra dates to 1929, when Wheeling was a prosperous industrial and glassmaking city on the Ohio River with enough local players and enough civic ambition to support an orchestra of its own. It has performed continuously ever since, making it one of the older orchestras in West Virginia and the main professional ensemble for the state's northern panhandle and the neighboring counties of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

For much of its life the orchestra's home has been the Capitol Theatre, a 1928 downtown auditorium built for vaudeville and movies. The building fell dark in the 2000s and reopened after the city of Wheeling bought and restored it, and the symphony returned to its stage. Summer has long taken the players outdoors to Oglebay Park, the municipal resort above the city, where the orchestra's Fourth of July concert draws crowds far larger than any indoor hall could hold. Rachael Worby led the orchestra as music director for many years beginning in the mid 1980s and became its most publicly visible figure, touring the state's schools and communities. André Raphel served as music director in the years that followed. John Gennaro Devlin was appointed music director in 2019.

Today the Wheeling Symphony works as a regional orchestra in the fullest sense, pairing a short classical series with pops, family, holiday, and film-with-live-orchestra programs, and moving between the Capitol Theatre, Wesbanco Arena, park lawns, and local churches. Education work in Ohio Valley schools remains a steady part of what it does.
