About the Canton Symphony Orchestra

The Canton Symphony Orchestra is a regional orchestra performing at Umstattd Hall in the Zimmermann Symphony Center in downtown Canton, Ohio. Its season mixes classical subscription concerts with pops programs, holiday shows, choral performances, and education concerts for families and students. A first-time visitor can expect a full symphonic ensemble playing standard orchestral repertoire alongside lighter, audience-friendly programs, in a hall sized for a close, immediate listening experience rather than a cavernous big-city space. The orchestra draws on conductors and guest artists across its season, giving listeners a chance to hear different interpretive approaches to familiar and new music. It serves as a cultural anchor for the Canton area, with a schedule that welcomes both longtime subscribers and newcomers.

History

The Canton Symphony Orchestra traces its beginnings to 1937, when local musicians and civic supporters organized a community ensemble in a manufacturing city that already had an active music scene. Like many orchestras of its era it began with a largely amateur roster and grew into a professional group over the following decades, drawing players from Canton, Akron, Cleveland, and the region's universities.

For much of its life the orchestra performed in Canton's civic auditorium downtown. Its present home is Umstattd Hall at the Zimmermann Symphony Center, which serves as both concert venue and the organization's offices and rehearsal space, an arrangement that lets the orchestra run its education programs and youth ensembles under the same roof as its concerts.

Gerhardt Zimmermann, who led the orchestra for many years and for whom the symphony center is named, shaped the group's growth into a fully professional regional orchestra and expanded its classical series. Later music directors continued that work, and the organization built out a wide education program including youth orchestras for area students and school concerts that bring thousands of children into the hall each year.

Today the Canton Symphony presents a season of classical, pops, holiday, and family programs, plus choral collaborations with regional singers. This season it works with a rotating group of guest conductors rather than a single podium presence, giving audiences a chance to hear the same players under different hands across the year.
