Symphonic Suite from The Fellowship of the Ring

The suite opens with a hushed, mysterious introduction, low strings and woodwinds setting a folk-like tone before a warm, pastoral melody associated with the Shire, home to the story's hobbit characters, emerges in the winds and strings. That gentle music gradually gives way to darker material built on repeated, ominous rhythmic figures as the mood shifts toward menace, reflecting the story's turn from a peaceful homeland toward danger. A broad, noble theme associated with the fellowship itself, often carried by horns, provides the suite's most heroic climax. The piece typically closes by returning to a version of the opening's quieter, folk-like material, bringing the suite full circle. As with any suite drawn from film cues, expect several distinct musical ideas linked together rather than one theme developed continuously throughout.

Howard Shore composed the score for Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring, the first installment of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy released in 2001, drawing on a large system of recurring themes tied to specific places and characters across the whole trilogy. The score was widely praised and won Shore an Academy Award. Concert arrangers later assembled selections from the first film's score into standalone symphonic suites so orchestras could perform the music without an accompanying screening, combining the score's best known themes, including the music associated with the Shire and with the fellowship itself, into a single continuous concert piece.
