German tenor with a dark, baritone-tinged sound

In short

Jonas Kaufmann is a German tenor born in Munich in 1969 and one of the best-known opera singers working today. He sings Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca with the New York Philharmonic in November 2026, in a concert version at Carnegie Hall.

What to listen for

Kaufmann is known for a dark, rich tenor, with a baritone-like weight in the middle of the voice and strong high notes. He can sing very softly as well as loudly, which suits Puccini's love music. In Tosca, listen for his aria about a lover's portrait and the heartbreaking farewell song before dawn in the last act.

Life

Kaufmann studied voice in Munich and began in smaller opera houses in Germany. His career grew through the late 1990s and 2000s, and he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2006. He sings German, Italian and French roles at leading houses and gives recitals and recordings.
