Joe Hisaishi

Joe Hisaishi is a Japanese composer and conductor best known for scoring nearly every Studio Ghibli film, including "My Neighbor Totoro," "Spirited Away," and "Howl's Moving Castle." Since the 1980s his melodies, simple, singable, often built on piano, have become some of the most widely performed film music in the world. He also writes concert works for orchestra outside of film, and regularly conducts his own music with orchestras internationally.

Hisaishi's film scores favor clear, hummable melodies over complex harmony, often stated first on solo piano before the full orchestra takes them up. Rhythms are steady and often build through repeating patterns, a technique borrowed from minimalist music, giving pieces a sense of gradual swelling rather than sudden climax. Strings carry warmth and nostalgia, while woodwinds often supply a pastoral, wistful color. Pieces tend to open quietly, with a single instrument or a hushed texture, then grow in layers toward a fuller orchestral statement before receding again at the close. Many of his concert arrangements, like the suites drawn from his Ghibli scores, string several themes together into a continuous sequence rather than a single strict form. The overall mood ranges from tender and childlike to sweeping and cinematic, but rarely turns harsh or dissonant.

Joe Hisaishi was born Mamoru Fujisawa in 1950 in Nagano, Japan. He adopted his stage name, a Japanese rendering that echoes the American producer Quincy Jones, early in his career while working in film and television music. He trained in composition and developed an early interest in minimalist music, the style built on repeating patterns that would later shape his own melodic writing.

His career turned decisively in 1984, when he composed the score for Hayao Miyazaki's "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind." That collaboration continued through Studio Ghibli's founding and its subsequent films, including "My Neighbor Totoro," "Kiki's Delivery Service," "Princess Mononoke," "Spirited Away," and "Howl's Moving Castle." These scores brought his music to audiences far beyond Japan and established the melodic, orchestral sound now closely associated with Ghibli's films.

Beyond film, Hisaishi has continued to write concert works, including symphonic pieces and a concerto for orchestra, and has founded and led ensembles dedicated to performing his own music. He remains active as a composer and conductor, regularly touring with orchestras around the world to perform his film scores in concert form, and continuing to write new music for both film and the concert hall.
