What to listen for
The tenor opens Messiah's solo singing with "Comfort ye my people" and "Every valley shall be exalted," two of the work's best known numbers, sung before the chorus has sung a note. "Every valley" is a fast, ornamented aria whose long melismas, single syllables stretched across many quick notes, on the word "exalted" demand agile, precise singing. The tenor returns later for shorter recitatives that narrate parts of the Christmas and Passion story between the choral movements.
