In short

Clinton Webb appears as horn soloist in Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 2, part of a Spokane Symphony program built around Sibelius. Our directory does not have independent information about him beyond this appearance, so this page describes the concerto rather than a personal biography.

What to listen for

Strauss wrote his Second Horn Concerto late in life, decades after his First, and it asks for both lyrical warmth and real agility from the soloist, including fast passages that recall the hunting-horn tradition the instrument grew out of. Expect long, singing phrases in the slow middle section, framed by outer movements full of leaps and quick figuration that test a horn player's control across the instrument's wide range. Paired here with Sibelius's Symphony No. 7, a single continuous movement, the program moves from Strauss's warm late-Romantic voice into Sibelius's colder, more compressed northern sound.
