In short

Ailyn Perez is an American soprano who sings leading roles in opera houses in the United States and Europe. She is listed here as the soprano soloist in Osvaldo Golijov's Ayre with the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra in June 2027.

What to listen for

Her voice is warm and full, with a bright top, and she is known for lyric roles in Italian and French opera such as Violetta in La traviata and Juliette. Ayre is different from those stage roles: it is a song cycle that blends medieval Spanish, Arabic and Sephardic Jewish music with modern sounds. Listen for how she moves between the long, curling melodies of the old songs and the rhythmic, percussive settings around her.

Life

Perez was born in Chicago to Mexican parents. She trained at the Houston Grand Opera studio and won a major international singing competition, Operalia, in 2012. She has since sung at leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera.
