About the Greenville Symphony Orchestra
The Greenville Symphony Orchestra is the professional regional orchestra of Greenville, South Carolina, presenting a full season of classical, chamber, film, holiday, choral, and family programs across several venues around the city, including the Peace Concert Hall and the Gunter Theatre. A first-timer can expect a mix of familiar symphonic warhorses alongside newer or lesser-known works, plus smaller chamber concerts and themed programs like film-score nights or holiday concerts that make the orchestra approachable for newcomers. With a busy schedule of over two dozen concerts a season, the orchestra serves as a musical hub for the upstate South Carolina region, offering something for both seasoned concertgoers and those attending their first live orchestral performance.
History
The orchestra began in 1948 as a community ensemble drawing on players from Greenville and the surrounding textile towns, and it has counted 1950 as its founding date in much of its own material. For its first decades it was largely a volunteer group that rehearsed and performed in school auditoriums and church spaces, gradually adding paid principal players as the audience grew.
The opening of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in 1990 changed the orchestra's life. Peace Concert Hall gave it a purpose built room with a proper stage and acoustics, and the adjoining Gunter Theatre gave it a small hall suited to chamber programs, where a handful of players perform without a conductor or with the music director leading from within the group. The orchestra has kept both rooms as its home ever since.
Edvard Tchivzhel, a Russian born conductor who defected to the United States in 1991 while on tour, became music director in the late 1990s and led the orchestra for more than two decades, a tenure that expanded the Masterworks series and raised the ensemble's playing standard. He continues to appear as a guest, conducting two programs this season. Peter Leonard led the orchestra before him. Lee Mills, an American conductor with experience in Brazil and Europe, conducts the bulk of the current season.
Today the Greenville Symphony pairs a core classical series with programming built to bring in first time listeners: live film scores, holiday concerts with chorus, family matinees and short informal performances in venues around the city. Its players are drawn from the region's professional musicians and university faculty.
