Program

  1. Edward Elgar Enigma Variations, Op. 36
  2. Dmitri Shostakovich Festive Overture (People's Choice Selection) from Festive Overture, Op. 96
  3. Samuel Barber Knoxville: Summer of 1915, for high voice and orchestra, Op. 24

Artists

Running time: about 48 min (estimate from the works' usual timings; not every piece has one)

Worth the drive: Elgar's set of orchestral variations portrays fourteen friends (and himself) through musical caricature, anchored by the beloved slow movement "Nimrod." The piece opens with a wistful, halting theme in G minor, quiet and searching, that will return transformed in each variation. More about Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, Op. 36 →
