The video game composer whose UNDERTALE score fills symphony halls

In short

Toby Fox is an American composer and video game designer best known for creating UNDERTALE, a 2015 role-playing game for which he wrote all the music himself. His songs mix simple, catchy melodies with sudden shifts in style, from jaunty circus tunes to somber piano lines. Originally built from home studio software, this music has since been rearranged for full orchestras and now regularly appears on symphony programs, introducing concert audiences to a soundtrack first known only from headphones and game consoles.

What the music sounds like

Fox's music was written for a video game, not a concert hall, so orchestral versions are arrangements of his original synthesizer and sampled tracks. Melodies are short, hummable, and often repeat with small variations rather than developing over a long span. A single piece might jump between a bouncy, comic theme and a slow, aching one, mirroring the game's swings between humor and sadness. Rhythms are steady and often march like or dance like, with clear, singable tunes sitting above simple chord patterns. Orchestral arrangements add strings and brass for warmth and weight that the original electronic sounds only implied. Pieces tend to be short, a few minutes at most, and concert selections are usually suites stitching several of these short cues together into one continuous listening experience.

Life

Toby Fox was born in the United States in 1991. Before working on his own games, he was active in online fan music communities, contributing tracks to fan-made projects built around existing game franchises, which gave him early practice writing large amounts of music quickly and in many different styles.

In 2015, Fox released UNDERTALE, a role-playing video game he designed largely on his own, writing, programming, and scoring it himself. The game became widely known for its music, which listeners and critics singled out as unusually memorable for something made by a single, self-taught composer. Themes from the score recur throughout the game, tied to specific characters and moments, so that a melody heard early on returns transformed later, an approach that translates naturally into orchestral suites built for the concert hall.

Since UNDERTALE, Fox has continued to write and release music tied to his subsequent game projects. His concert-hall presence has grown as orchestras have arranged selections from his scores for live performance, introducing his music to audiences who may never have played the games it came from. He continues to work actively in game design and composition.
